RULES FOR THE USE OF BARNACK CEMETERY
Barnack Parish Council are responsible for the maintenance of Barnack Cemetery.
The grass is mown throughout the summer months, the hedges are maintained on a yearly basis and a number of trees have been planted in recent years along the perimeter fences and alongside the central pathway.
Many of these trees have been dedicated to former residents. The Council aim to ensure
There is a dedicated area, within the cemetery, for the interment of ashes where the grave spaces will be half the size of a burial plot. Full sized graves can no longer to purchased for the interment of ashes.
In order to meet these simple aims and given that no regular cemetery keeper is employed, families purchasing a burial plot are asked to abide by the following rules:
For burials, memorials may consist of headstones only and these should not be above 3 feet in height. Curb stones or wooden memorials are not permitted.
For the interment of ashes, memorials should consist of a small headstone not bigger than 2 feet 6 inches high and 2 feet wide.
Small flat plaques can be used as an alternative to a headstone but these must be placed below the level of the ground, so that the grave can still be mown.
It would be appreciated if the type of stone chosen for memorials could be in keeping with the stone of the local area. Black headstones are not allowed to avoid the cemetery from becoming a sombre area.
Plots are allocated by the Parish Council and only residents of Barnack, Pilsgate and Southorpe are eligible to reserve one in advance.
A vase for flowers may be incorporated into a headstone or placed in the ground immediately in front or at the side of the headstone on the headstone base. This allows the grave to be maintained enabling the mower to move freely across the graves. Planters or vases may not be placed on the remaining length of the grave as these prevent the cemetery from being maintained.
Flowers, trees or shrubs may not be planted on graves as these prevent the cemetery from being maintained.
Plastic flowers are not welcomed as the wire stems can cause damage to the mowers.
Families are requested to remove dead flowers or wreaths from the graves. Bins are provided at the front and rear of the cemetery, which are emptied fortnightly.
Watering cans for watering flowers are provided and must be returned to either the tap by the central hedge or the tap at the front of the cemetery. These taps are strictly for the use within the cemetery only.
There is a scale of charges for the use of the cemetery. The term "resident" applies to all those who were residents in Barnack, Pilsgate or Southorpe at the time of their death or those those who had lived in the village until leaving for nursing (home or hospital) care.
Any other requests or queries should be referred to the Parish Council.
